NIAA Research Award 2017

We are pleased to announce that the 2nd NIAA Research Award is now open for applications. The award aims to promote and encourage current (within 18 months of submission deadline) and active researchers within the field of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine or pain research in the UK.

It will be awarded to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in scientific research relevant to anaesthesia, perioperative care or pain and will allow new investigators to achieve recognition through presentation at a national meeting with peer-review.

The 2017 NIAA Research Award will be presented at the NIAA Annual Scientific Meeting on Friday 12th May 2017 at the RCoA in London.

Applicants are invited to submit a summary of their 'body of work', this should be fully referenced and state the author's contribution. A 'body of work' will include a project that covers a clear, evidence-based research question, appropriate methods, well-conduced study/studies and statistical analysis of results drawing to a valid conclusion. A 'body of work' would typically be the equivalent to two or more research papers on one subject area or from a higher degree thesis (MD/PhD).

The closing date for applications is Monday 13 March 2017 at 5pm.

The John Snow Anaesthesia Intercalated Awards 2017

The NIAA is delighted to announce details of the John Snow Intercalated Awards available in 2017.

Awards will be offered by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI)/Anaesthesia, the British Journal of Anaesthesia (BJA)/Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA), and the Neuroanaesthesia and Critical Care Society of Great Britain and Ireland (NACCSGBI).

Designed to encourage medical student interest in anaesthesia and its related disciplines, these awards go to the student and not the supervisor/institution and are meant to contribute towards living costs.

The awards are intended for students who are studying as part of a programme of work leading towards a registered medical qualification. Therefore students of intercalated Bachelors or Masters degrees are eligible to apply. Applications from students undertaking either programme of study will be reviewed in parallel.

o The AAGBI/Anaesthesia and BJA/RCoA are each offering awards of £2,000
o NACCSGBI is offering one award of £1,000

Project running costs will be funded by the supervisor/institution.

Each institution can submit a maximum of four applications, so some co-ordination between supervisors will be required.

The closing date for applications is Friday 31 March 2017 at 5pm.

For more information and to apply for these awards please visit the NIAA website here.

NELA animation on improving data feedback

The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) has launched the first in a series of Quality Improvement animations.

NELA data collection is most effective for local improvement if we feedback our data following a few simple rules. The first animation in the series describes how we can use our NELA data to drive local improvement, using simple effective principles for data feedback.

For more information on the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit, please visit here. To access the NELA webtool, please visit here.

NELA aims to enable the improvement of the quality of care for patients undergoing emergency laparotomy through the provision of high quality comparative data from all providers of emergency laparotomy.

The RCoA 25th Anniversary countdown begins

The RCoA's year-long Anniversary celebration is now just around the corner. The past quarter-century has seen anaesthesia and our College make huge advances and the RCoA today is virtually unrecognisable from the organisation in 1992.

In 2017 the College officially begins its programme of activities to mark the milestone, and will be celebrating our 25 year history as a Royal College, as well as looking back at the development of the specialty before this point. We also look ahead to the next quarter-century for the College and our specialty, a topic explored in detail by Dr Ramani Moonesinghe in the latest ARIES Talk, in which she asks whether anaesthetists will be required in 25 years.

From regional events to trainer awards and photography competitions, there is something for everyone in 2017. See our full programme of events here.
