NIAA Research Grants: Round 1 2016
The deadline for submitting an application to R1 is fast approaching. Grants are being offered by AAGBI/Anaesthesia, RCoA/BJA, BSOA, DAS, NACCSGBI, OAA, RA-UK and VASGBI. Various amounts are available. The deadline for applications is 12 noon, Friday 22nd April. Please check the NIAA website for further details and application forms.
Vacancy: HSRC Deputy Director
There's just over a week to go until the deadline for the HSRC Deputy Director vacancy. A fixed term 3 year post, the role will involve supporting the HSRC Director, deputising where required and leading the next stage of the HSRC's Clinical Measures Programme. It is also supported by the cost of 1 PA per week backfilled to the post holder's Trust, and requires a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week. Clinical Trials Network - now launched
We're pleased to announce that the UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network is now Live following a successful launch by Professor Rupert Pearse at the inaugural NIAA Annual Scientific Meeting on 14 April. The aim of the CTN is to build infrastructure to support patient recruitment into large clinical trials, and generate new evidence to inform the care of more than 300 million patients undergoing surgery worldwide each year.

NIAA Annual Scientific Meeting
Thanks to those who attended our inaugural ASM, we hope you found it as inspiring as we did: with presenters including Professor Ian Roberts and Dr Ramani Moonesinghe and the launch of the CTN, it was a very productive day. The first NIAA Research Award saw seven finalists presenting their PhD/MD work to a judging panel who scored the presentations in a number of areas including relevance to perioperative and pain medicine, study methods and techniques, and confidence in answering questions. After strong competition the Award Chair Professor Fang Gao Smith announced that the panel had selected Dr Pervez Sultan as the overall Award winner, and Dr Jaimin Patel as runner-up. Professor Monty Mythen presented winner, runner-up and finalist certificates to all seven competitors. Congratulations to all.

James Lind blood transfusion survey - have your say
As you may know the James Lind Alliance works with professionals and the public to develop future research priorities from a wide perspective in focussed areas. This is done through a careful sequential process which starts with an online questionnaire, where possible important questions are provided by a wide range of stakeholders.
The Alliance is currently undertaking an exercise to identify priorities in relation to blood transfusion, which is clearly of relevance to our specialty and patients, and would very much welcome feedback and suggested questions through a short online survey. The survey can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/h6jf52l and will take about 5-10 minutes to complete, including suggesting your questions. You can also find out more information on our website here.
NIHR opportunities to influence health research in the UK
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) programme boards and panels select the most important research questions to commission, and make funding recommendations on project applications.
They are currently looking for additional expertise for the boards / panels for a number of programmes including: • NIHR Public Health Research (PHR) • NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research (HS&DR)

AAGBI recruiting ASAP Coordinator
The AAGBI's charitable arm, the AAGBI Foundation, is seeking to appoint an Anaesthesia Sprint Audit of Practice (ASAP) Coordinator who will be co-opted onto its Research and Grants Committee, which reports to the Foundation Board.
This is a voluntary role (unremunerated except for expenses) and offers an opportunity to contribute to the strategic development, funding decisions and governance of audits relating to the AAGBI's Working Parties and guidelines.

Calling all anaesthetic trainees
The GAT Annual Scientific Meeting is the AAGBI's annual event tailored to the education and professional development of anaesthetic trainees, first year consultants and medical students. This year's GAT ASM takes place in Nottingham over three days, 15-17 June.

• Practical workshops: free mentoring taster sessions, airways and more
• Friday Exam day, covering post, primary and final FRCA topics
